An internet of things platform is a collection of software and hardware architecture that allows cloud hosting, sensors, data analytics software and physical objects to integrate in order to provide a meaningful information system. The operational data generated by the internet of things sensor devices are transmitted over wifi or zigbee or RFID gateway devices on to a cloud storage area.
The generated data (called big data) is stored in a database that could hold huge amounts of data. Typical databases include MongoDB, NoSQL DB, Clouding NOSQL etc which provides effective and efficient data manipulation techniques.
The stored data is interpreted as information depending on the context under which the IOT sensor are deployed. Automobiles will transmit road conditions, supply chain trucks will rely the temperature of life saving vaccines, current sensors will show the power being consumed by a fixed asset and so on.
The internet of things platform would have an alert mechanism – a push message or an SMS or e.mail to indicate exceptions in the operations. Driving too fast, Temperature too high, equipment usage exceeded standard operations etc.
M2M internet of things and predictive analytics can be modelled on Cumulocity IOT , or IOT cloud foundry such as IBM Bluemix
