The reverse of the Web
According to Dries Buytaert, founder of Drupal, co-founder and CTO of Acquia, we are in the middle of a digital revolution. We are shifting from a “pull-based” web to a “push-based” web, meaning content, products, and experiences will be streamed or pushed to us as needed. He calls this phenomenon – The Big Reverse of the Web.
Facebook, Flipboard, Google NOW etc are some examples. Facebook “pushes” a stream of personalized information designed to tell you what is happening with your friends and family. Flipboard aggregates articles from all over the web, filters it based on our interests and “pushes” the relevant and interesting content to you. Google Now, google’s intelligent personal assistant, along with answering user initiated queries, it also proactively delivers to users information that it predicts they may want(based on their search habits, emails, location and other google services).
According to Dries, What people really want is to tune into information rather than having to work to get information. It saves them time and effort and in the long run, an improved user experience always wins. In most cases, “Show me what I want” is more useful than “Let me search around and see what I can find”. So ideally our products and services should be more personalized to maintian that one-to-one interaction with customer. To provide such an experience our products need to harness the data collected within our own user platform and also co-exist with current aggregators and external web services.
In Patient portal, our web based portal for patients to interact with HIS-Netra, we have implemented on this concept of reverse of the web. Basic functionality of portal now is to allow patients to search doctors, book appointments and get lab results and other relevant documents.
